Mozi Masagi - Malnutrition Prevention Initiative Towards Behaviour & Practices in Garut

Nutrition, Maternal and Child Health

Initiative Detail

Location Information

Ciwalen, Garut Kota, Garut, West Java

The Puskesmas Guntur in Garut City has launched "MOZI MASAGI" (Motor Gizi Makanan Sarat Gizi), an initiative aimed at preventing stunting and addressing malnutrition among infants and young children. This initiative was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely limited access to nutritious food, particularly for the lower-middle-class, and hindered the regular monitoring of child growth at community health posts (posyandu). Ciwalen, chosen for its high stunting prevalence of 21.89%, became the focus for the initiative's deployment due to its status as a stunting locus in Garut District as indicated by the August 2019 Weighing Month Results. The program continued and expanded even as the pandemic subsided, reaching out to Sukamentri, another area with a significant stunting prevalence of 17.99%.

The innovation of MOZI MASAGI lies in its comprehensive socialization to various programs and sectors, training of healthcare workers and nutrition cadres, and meticulous analysis of growth monitoring data from posyandu. Group discussions and forums are conducted to identify positive deviant behaviors or unique practices within the community that contribute to improved child-rearing, nutrition, and hygiene habits, which can then be adopted more widely. Community meetings facilitate the sharing of local health issues, impact assessments, identification of positive deviants, and the development of commitments and solutions, culminating in the establishment of nutrition posts (Pos Gizi).

At these Pos Gizi, activities span 10-12 days and include attendance logging, daily activity planning, task assignments, initial and final weigh-ins for children, food contributions from participants, guided play, health messaging, and practice of good habits such as handwashing and nail cutting. Parents are encouraged to contribute raw food ingredients and participate in cooking, fostering a culture of balanced nutrition with local foods. Monitoring and evaluation are carried out through home visits by cadres two weeks post-program to observe any behavioral changes.

The results of MOZI MASAGI are promising, with behavioral changes and health improvements observed, including weight gain in stunted and wasted infants. The initiative also ensures the documentation and risk analysis of growth data, which is inputted into the e-PPGBM system, demonstrating a sustainable approach to tackling malnutrition and stunting in Garut City.
